Ready Report: Veto Fight on Trust Act, Ready Bill Signed & More
I hope you and your family are doing well as we enter the month of May. The legislative Session has ended, and we are now getting into campaign season. I’ll have more on that in future communication but there’s a lot of news to share from the past week. Check it out below and feel free to reply with questions, ideas or concerns.
Senate GOP and I Call on Governor Moore to Veto Trust Act
Senate Republicans fought hard against the Trust Act, which essentially makes Maryland a Sanctuary State, during the 2026 Legislative Session. However, against our best wishes, the bill was passed in the final hours.
Senate Republicans are now calling on Governor Moore to veto this incredibly short-sighted legislation that will make our communities much less safe. You can read our full statement below.

Ready in the Press
A couple of weeks ago, I joined WBAL’s C4 and Bryan Newman to discuss how Democrat lawmakers pushed through the Community Trust Act in the final hours of the 2026 Legislative Session. Republicans attempted to offer amendments and most were voted down on party line votes. You can watch this full interview by clicking here.
Ready Mental Health Legislation Receives Bill Signing – SB 707
Earlier this week I was back down in Annapolis for the bill signing for SB 707 – legislation I was able to work with NAMI Maryland and other mental health advocates and family members to pass. SB 707 facilitates better access to treatment for those with serious mental illness, such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, who are unable because of their illness, to recognize they are seriously ill and need treatment.
Before this bill, Maryland was one of the only 2 states that had no definition for the “danger standard” for involuntary evaluation and inpatient treatment, leaving courts and our health system often in limbo. This leads to a small but significant number of people wandering the streets, having to frequently utilize emergency rooms and occupy law enforcement and first responder resources.
Beginning on October 1st, Maryland will have the needed definition in the law to help people get their loved ones the treatment they desperately need. I appreciate the bipartisan support we received in the Senate Finance Committee and House Health Committee.
