As the parent of two elementary school children and husband of a school teacher, the unspeakably horrific shooting that took place in Texas this week is something that saddens me and angers me deeply. Words seem so hollow as we think about the loss of those beautiful children and heroic teachers. While there's a predictable rush to blame, facts are still being gathered and many questions are unanswered. I will continue to pray for those who've lost their loved ones. I have worked very hard as a legislator to make sure that funds are available for SROs in our schools and that our buildings are secure. Obviously the mental health of young people in general has been deeply hurt during these past two years - but even before COVID there were severe problems. We need whole families
Gas Tax Gouging- No Relief in Sight
During the last legislative session, I co-sponsored Senate Bill 337, which would have stopped the automatic inflation tax increase on fuel coming this July 1st. Unfortunately, despite a $7 billion dollar state surplus, the bill did not pass, and a floor amendment was unilaterally voted down by Democrats. With record-high fuel and energy costs, now is not the time to raise taxes. This week, Governor Hogan asked Maryland’s Comptroller to pause this tax as he has done with other tax breaks in the past. Republicans have also called for a Special Session of the Maryland General Assembly to take action. Despite having a record budget surplus, the Democrat leadership in the Maryland General Assembly refuses to help during this record inflation. This is another reason why the 2022 election is so very important.
