We’re now the fifth week of the 2020 Session. The Senate has had over 1,000 bills introduced and in the House of Delegates, more than 1,500. In Maryland, every bill receives a hearing, so all legislators are busy hearing and vetting bills in their respective committees. As always, your thoughts and opinions are welcome at [email protected].

Sanctuary Legislation
Once again, the Maryland General Assembly is hearing bills from those that support and oppose sanctuary practices in our State. I introduced Senate Bill 332 this session to require local jurisdictions to cooperate with ICE detainers. There are horrible stories of illegal immigrants with ICE detainers being released only to commit horrible crimes. Thankfully in Carroll County, Sheriff DeWees cooperates with ICE detainers and is committed to continuing this practice. Sheriff DeWees is strongly supportive of my legislation and we are both completely opposed to bills that have been introduced to make Maryland a sanctuary state. More Anti-Gun Bills
As you know I am a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, and have opposed every bill brought before the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee that seeks to burden law abiding gun owners. The House Speaker has sponsored legislation, House Bill 1261, that would add more guns to Maryland’s already restrictive list of banned “assault weapons”. I strongly oppose any legislation that seeks to strip Marylanders of their Constitutional right to keep and bear arms. I am keeping my eye on this legislation and, should it make it to the Senate, I will do everything in my power to prevent it becoming law.
