Dear Friends,

I hope you had a Happy Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a great time for us to remember the people whose sacrifice made and saved America, the greatest nation on earth. Over the weekend, I had the honor of participating in Westminster’s annual Memorial Day parade. It's always good for us to take some time to reflect on the great sacrifices that the men and women of the armed services make to defend our way of life. Thank you to all those who have served, but especially on Memorial Day, we remember and thank those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Maryland receives AAA Bond Rating

Last week, Maryland State Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp announced that all three major bond rating agencies have re-affirmed the State’s strong AAA bond rating in preparation for the upcoming competitive sale of State General Obligation Bonds on Wednesday, June 8, 2016. Maryland is one of only 9 states to hold the coveted AAA rating from all three agencies. S&P Global Ratings, one of these agencies, commented on the momentum Maryland’s economy has regained in 2015. Although all agencies noted that pension-funded ratios are below average, Governor Hogan’s actions for the last 2 years have improved these ratios for the benefit of those who will receive these pensions as well as the entire state. All agencies also noted Maryland’s strong economy and prudent fiscal management. The state of Maryland uses the proceeds from these bonds to finance necessary capital projects, such as schools, community colleges, university projects and hospitals.

Life Insurance Town Hall Forum

Maryland Insurance Commissioner Al Redmer, Jr. will be conducting a town hall forum to solicit feedback on issues related to the state’s life and health insurance sector. Consumers, business owners, and regulated insurance entities are invited to participate. Some of the topics to be discussed include implementation of the Affordable Care Act, changes to employee benefit plans, as well as options with medical stop-loss insurance, and experiences with the Maryland’s Health Benefit Exchange.  Carolyn Quattrocki, Executive Director of the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange, will also be in attendance with Commissioner Redmer.
