Ready Report- November 7

Dear Friend,

I want to start off this update offering my sincerest prayers to the victims and families of the recent terrorist attack in NYC and church shooting in Texas. It feels like we are having one of these awful events every few days. I pray that we pull together as a country after these horrendous acts of violence. I’m certainly hugging my family tighter and I know you will join me in praying that God will heal and protect our nation.

Hitting Our Goal:

Last week I emailed you asking for help to hit our campaign’s goal of 400 individual contributions- since the 2017 Session ended in April- by midnight November 1st. We needed 27 more with two days to go. I’m thrilled to say that we had over 30 people make a contribution, ranging from $5 to $200, that helped us blow past that goal and had other people who couldn’t give volunteer to help the campaign in other ways. Thank you so much for your support!

Hogan Pushes ACCESS Initiative

Last week Governor Hogan announced a major initiative promoting computer science education. The computer science field is one of the fasting growing fields in the country. It is estimated that Maryland has around 20,000 openings for computer science jobs statewide. The Governor has committed an additional $5 million in funding and introduced new legislation to establish computer science standards for K-12 education in Maryland.

This announcement builds on the work that District 5 Delegate April Rose has done by highlighting the importance of computer science education. Delegate Rose has not only been a vocal supporter of this idea, she has introduced legislation in the past two years to support technological training that is compatible with the 21st Century workforce. We’re thankful to be working right alongside Governor Hogan in advancing STEM and Computer Science training in our high schools.

Manchester Area Merchants Association Old Fashion Christmas & Holiday Open House

On Friday, November 24th, the M.A.M.A will be hosting an Old Fashion Christmas & Holiday Open House. The event will include dozens of local vendors showing off their goods and services. Much of the attention on Black Friday is directed towards large chain retail establishments, but it is important that we support our local businesses and restaurants as well. The event will be held on Main Street and within the Manchester Activity Building from 4-8pm.

Second Early Carroll Voting Center Opening in 2018

The 2018 elections will be here before you know it. Last year, the lone early voting center in Westminster saw a record turnout. In 2018, a second facility will open at the South Carroll Swim Club in Winfield. Early voting can be a more convenient manner of casting your ballot for many voters. It is great that Carroll will have an additional facility to exercise its right to vote.
