Senator Ready OpEd on Kirwin Commission
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been updating you on my thoughts on the Kirwin Commission’s education recommendations. In my recent OpEd in the Carroll times, I discuss the need for state legislators and activist groups — including education establishment groups spending millions promoting an “all-or-nothing” approach to Kirwan — to embrace a realistic, compromise path to accomplishing these goals. Governor Hogan Announces $6.4 Million Federal Grant to Combat Opioid Epidemic
This week, Governor Hogan announced more than $6 million from the Department of Justice for the State of Maryland to support a coordinated, statewide response to the opioid crisis. This award will be used in a statewide grant program, which provides resources to support state and local efforts to reduce violent crime and drug abuse, enhance public safety, and support victims of crime. While the Department of Health and Opioid Operational Command Center reports that more than 1,000 people died from an opioid overdose in Maryland during the first half of 2019, data also shows that Maryland experienced its first six-month decline in the total number of opioid-related fatalities in at least a decade.
