Hundreds of Maryland laws went into effect Tuesday, October 1st spanning subjects from criminal justice reform to election law to the state's medical cannabis commission. These include but are not limited to increasing the age to purchase cigarettes, cigars, and e-cigarettes to 21, The application process for a Maryland Wear and Carry Permit will switch from a hand-written paper application to the Maryland State Police online licensing portal, and expanded laws governing on-line harassment.
Laura & Reid’s Law
In the 2019 Session, my number one legislative priority was a bill named in Laura and Reid’s law in honor of Laura Wallen and her unborn son, Reid. After meeting the Wallen family, the shocking statistics of increased risk of abuse/and or harm when a woman becomes pregnant made it clear that we need to do more to protect these women and their children. This law takes a major step in protecting pregnant women and their unborn children from domestic violence, making intended assault against a pregnant woman a felony, with an extended penalty of up to 10 years. REAL ID Update
The October 1st, 2020 federal REAL ID deadline is now only a year away. The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) remains focused on ensuring all Marylanders are educated about and prepared for REAL ID. Marylanders can check their REAL ID status by entering a driver’s license or identification card number in the REAL ID Lookup Tool at https://realid.mva.maryland.gov.
