Climate Solutions Now Act of 2021 (Senate Bill 414)

This week, we extensively debated SB 414 - the Climate Solutions Now Act. This broad and expensive bill seeks to rob millions of taxpayer dollars from multiple "dedicated" funds including the Bay Restoration Fund (the "Flush" Fund) which was originally created by the Maryland General Assembly for cleaning up the Bay and tributaries by fixing failing wastewater treatment plants, remediating storm water runoff and fixing failing septic systems. They put that money into, among other things, planting 5 million trees over the next few years. I'm all for trees being planted but if that's the priority, it should come through a regular budget process NOT rob funds the government took from taxpayers for the specific purpose of cleaning up the Bay.

This legislation talks a big game but would have no measurable impact on the global climate or emissions. Please click here to watch my video explaining the issue further and you can click here to see my floor speech supporting an amendment that would have stopped the raid of these funds. Unfortunately the bill passed the Senate floor 34-11 on Friday. We are hoping that we can get help in the House of Delegates to defeat it.

Anti-Police Legislation in the House of Delegates Endangers Public Safety

The policing legislation package that was passed through the Maryland Senate last week was far from perfect. However, Democrats and Republicans in the Senate worked together for days amending and compromising on at least some of the measures - as I've explained in detail before.

Unfortunately, the House of Delegates this week passed a drastically different all-encompassing bill that is extremely radical and anti-public safety. The House Democrat Majority gave in to the loudest left-wing activists instead of listening to and working towards a reasonable approach. Now there will be a showdown between the House and Senate. You can count on me to stand firm in supporting our police officers and making sure we are listening to them.
