As we continue deeper into the summer of 2021, I hope you and your family are well. I wanted to update you today on some political items including the latest rankings for small business-related voting records in the General Assembly and Delegate Haven Shoemaker's announcement that he will be running for Carroll County State's Attorney next year. Also this week some good news about expanding broadband, securing state funds for one of our local parks and the annual 4H Fair in Carroll County is back open to the public this year.
Finally - there has been a lot of news swirling about the CDC "recommending" mask mandates in some places. I can assure you I oppose any mandates like this. As far as Carroll County, I'm expecting and hoping that we will see some good news in the coming days regarding this issue locally. Also, Governor Hogan has so far rejected these calls to re-enact masking or other "shut down" like mandates which make no sense. I will do my best to keep you posted on what's happening with this issue.
Senator Ready Earns Ranking of Most Pro-Business Voting Record:
Every year, the Maryland Free Enterprise Foundation — Maryland Free, and previously known as Maryland Business for Responsive Government — issues a report card grading state lawmakers on a series of votes. Votes fit into five categories: fiscal responsibility, regulation, labor relations, civil liability, and “social responsibility.” Unfortunately for Maryland employers and employees, the 2021 General Assembly did not choose such a modest approach; instead, the current Democrat-controlled legislature passed dozens of bills known to have negative effects on our business climate. This was a continuation of a long trend in Maryland. I’m proud to once again have earned the ranking of most pro-business voting record in the State Senate (minimum 4 years’ service). You can ready the entire report with list of bills here.
Delegate Shoemaker Announces Candidacy for Carroll County State’s Attorney
Last Tuesday, Delegate Haven Shoemaker announced his candidacy for Carroll County State’s Attorney in Westminster outside our historic courthouse. Our state's attorney for the past 7 years, Brian DeLeonardo was appointed to the Circuit Court by Governor Hogan. I was honored to introduce Haven at the announcement - he has my strong support. Haven has consistently been a champion for justice, fairness and public safety. Del. Shoemaker has practiced law for the past 29 years and previously served as a Hampstead Town Council Member and Carroll County Commissioner. The office of State's Attorney is a VERY important one as they are the prosecutor for the county when crimes are committed. We've seen what happens in places like Baltimore when the state's attorney doesn't follow the law or support our law enforcement. I know Haven will stand with our police, and stand up for justice for victims.
State Funds Approved for Hampstead War Memorial Park
This past Wednesday, the Board of Public Works approved a request from the Department of Natural Resources to commit $245,050 in funding from the Community Parks and Playground Program to replace the current bandstand and park bench seating with an amphitheater-style bandstand, additional seating, a walking path, period lighting and stamped concrete at War Memorial Park in Hampstead.
