Remembering 9/11 – 25 Years Later

Last Friday was the 25th Anniversary of the savage, evil and unprovoked September 11th attack on America.

It is hard to believe that it was 25 years ago. This evil terrorist attack perpetrated by radical Islamic extremists bent on tearing America apart changed our lives forever in ways that younger generations don’t understand – but it’s our job to ensure that we never forget.

There were 2,977 people who died on that otherwise beautiful early Fall day – September 11, 2001. It would have been thousands more without the absolute selfless heroism of firefighters, police and EMS who laid down their lives getting people to safety. And, of course we lost many more to directly related health issues in the years that followed.

We also must remember and honor those that gave their lives and sacred honor in hunting down the perpetrators of this attack and other terrorists. That work continues to this day. I was walking out of class at Carroll Community College that had begun right as the first plane hit the North Tower. The reality of the blessings of being an American ran right up against how fragile life can be. However, those moments brought us together in ways that seems distant today.

Marking and commemorating September 11th, 2001 is something that I hope can bring us back together and teach younger children and adults who were too young to understand just how things can be different if we put aside differences, even just for a little while.

We can never forget the sacrifice of so many that day and in the years that followed. May God continue to bless America.
